Continuous improvement professionals often talk about respect for people and building systems that enable people to enjoy meaningful employment. These principles sit at the heart of human-centered leadership and our AME community.
This year, it is time we retired two phrases: “You should…” and “Somebody should…”
These phrases conflict with leadership and real improvement. They outsource ownership, shut down creative problem-solving and disconnect us from people.
As AME Board chair Billy Taylor shares, "In the absence of ownership comes blame. If people don't know what they own, then they blame. When they know what they own, then they start taking advantage of ownership."
A culture of excellence is never created by saying, “Somebody should.” It is created by saying, “Somebody who did.” Continuous improvement is driven by that “somebody” who is willing to engage, to reflect and to take ownership.
So, let’s challenge ourselves in 2026 to notice when “You should…” and “Somebody should…” slips into our conversations and consider reframing it into language that invites learning, ownership and progress like:
“I will…”
“We can…”
“Let’s …”
“Here’s what I can do next…”
“What do you think?”
That small shift can make a profound difference.
