From the CEO: What America's 250th birthday can teach us about continuous improvement

As we head into the 4th of July holiday, I've been reflecting on what it means to celebrate America's independence while also looking ahead to our nation's 250th birthday.

Two hundred and fifty years is an incredible milestone. Think about all that has happened along the way: generations of people building, rebuilding, innovating, experimenting, occasionally getting it wrong, and then rolling up their sleeves and saying, "There has to be a better way." If that doesn't sound like continuous improvement, I don't know what it does.

The founders didn't set out to create something perfect. They set out to create something that could endure - a system designed to adapt and improve overtime. They trusted future generations to navigate change, solve problems, and continuously improve the world around them.

In many ways, they were the original improvement team. They learned, adjusted, debated, experimented, and responded to the realities of a new and changing world. They listened, adapted, and kept moving forward just like us.

Every day, we challenge the idea that "the way we've always done it" is the best way forward. We improve flow, reduce waste, strengthen systems, and create greater value for customers. And perhaps most importantly, we hold onto a principle that sits at the heart of both Lean and great leadership: people are rarely the problem to be fixed. More often than not, it’s the system.

Performance improves when people are trusted, empowered, and equipped to improve that system themselves. That feels very much in the spirit of what our founders envisioned when they placed their trust in people, local insight, and collective problem-solving.

So as you enjoy the fireworks, backyard barbecues, parades, beaches, and maybe an extra scoop of ice cream or double box of popcorn this holiday weekend, I hope you'll also take a moment to appreciate the incredible journey that brought us here and the opportunity we all have to keep improving what comes next.

Thank you for being part of this AME community and for the work you do every day. Take a look at all the Events  AME has to help you in this journey.

To our friends in the United States, Happy Independence Day! To our Canadian members, Happy Canada Day. I hope everyone enjoys their time with family and friends, disconnects for a bit, and returns refreshed and ready for the next improvement opportunity.

As always, please stay safe and keep looking out for one another.
