What does it take to secure support required for a long-term Lean transformation journey? The efforts must be intentional. Ms. Manuel-Reyes, Senior vice president for University Health and previous chief operating officer for a variety of other large health systems will discuss tactics to ensure an organizational commitment to the long-term journey. She will discuss the importance of immediate and meaningful outcomes. Attendees will learn about University Health’s ambulatory division’s successful use of a daily all-leadership virtual huddle to create a consistent culture of safety and continuous improvement across almost 40 locations providing a wide variety of services. The 2.5 hours per week of value adding activity has resulted in improved problem identification, system-thinking and has launched some key kaizen level activities. The huddle significantly contributes to the division’s talent program.

Katherine Reyes is the Senior vice-president, ambulatory services, for University Health, in San Antonio, Texas. Previous positions include chief operating officer for Sutter Gould Medical Foundation, Palo Alto Medical Foundation (Santa Cruz, CA) and Dignity Health Medical Foundation (California). She has held similar roles in other large delivery systems with operating budgets ranging between $300M and $1.2B. As an operations executive, she provides overall leadership and direction for multi-specialty medical groups, ancillary services and other support services. With a focus on culture transformation using lean management as her framework, she and her teams have consistently delivered top-decile performance in patient, physician and employee satisfaction metrics. Most notably, Sutter Gould Medical Foundation was recognized as the top-rated medical group in California in 2014 and 2015 by Consumer Reports. This recognition and similar such outcomes resulted in her teams hosting learning tours by international and domestic visitors. Ms. Reyes frequently presents at various lean conferences and is a guest lecturer for the University of California Merced and San Francisco, Texas Christian University, University of Texas San Antonio and San Jose State University. Ms. Reyes served on the board of directors for the western region of the Association for Manufacturing Excellence (AME), the premier international network of lean practioners. She holds a BS in healthcare administration from San Jose State University and a master’s degree in organizational management from the University of Phoenix.
