As we prepare for the AME Southeastern Regional Summit in Charlotte in May, I’m reminded how often I’ve heard the term VUCA lately. If it hasn’t crossed your path yet, it will.

VUCA - Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity - captures the reality many of our organizations face every day. This concept aligns with who we are as continuous improvement practitioners. In fact, CI professionals were built for VUCA long before the acronym existed.

Volatility calls for quick, thoughtful response. Our CI mindset equips us to stabilize processes, reduce variation and build systems that flex without breaking.

Uncertainty pushes us to seek clarity. Tools like PDCA, A3 thinking and structured problem-solving help us replace guesswork with learning cycles that illuminate the path forward.

Complexity requires simplification. Lean principles allow us to see the whole system, eliminate waste and focus on what truly creates value.

Ambiguity challenges us to experiment. Instead of waiting for perfect information, we test, learn and iterate — turning ambiguity into insight.

This is exactly why gatherings like the AME Charlotte 2026 Lean Summit matter. They give us the space to learn from one another, share openly and strengthen our capability. When we connect across industries, roles and experiences, we build resilience for our organizations, people and communities.

By the way, did you know we will have a unique opportunity to tour  the Pit Instruction & Training Center, where you will see lean transformation initiatives through its Lean Performance U brand?

And our workshops are top notch, packed with knowledge around:

  • Building daily improvement and coaching capability
  • People‑centric leadership
  • Sustaining lean through Toyota kata
  • Leading continuous improvement
  • The fulcrum of leadership
  • Training and coaching
  • Encouraging employers to improve their talent acquisition and retention systems

For those who celebrate Easter, I wish you a happy holiday. However you mark the season, I hope it inspires a meaningful time of hope, renewal and a welcome sign of spring and new possibilities. Thank you for being part of the AME community that is committed to sharing, learning, growing and embracing new possibilities.

As always, please stay safe and keep looking out for one another.
