I want to acknowledge the recent passing of an incredibly dear person, Bob Chapman. Bob was a 2023 AME International Conference keynote speaker in Cleveland, where he shared his beautiful message of “Truly human leadership.” His presentation was the first time I have ever seen an entire room rise to its feet in applause and tears. Bob was the recipient of the AME 2020 Hall of Fame recognition and was cherished by all who knew him.

Bob’s life and leadership stand as a powerful reminder that business can be one of the greatest forces for good when people are placed at its center. As CEO of Barry-Wehmiller, he championed the belief that every individual matters, transforming workplaces into communities built on dignity, trust and genuine human care. His philosophy of “Truly human leadership” embraces employees as family members whose work should bring meaning, purpose and fulfillment.
His mission to change the way leaders treat their people sparked a global movement, proving that compassion and high performance not only coexist — they thrive together. His experiences and the transformation he championed inspired his bestseller “Everybody Matters, The Extraordinary Power of Caring for Your People Like Family.”
Let’s honor Bob this week by living the message he devoted his life to: treat every person in your span of care like family, and lead with empathy, respect and genuine human concern. His core challenge to all of us is simple: See the people you lead as someone’s precious child and act accordingly.
On Bob’s LinkedIn post, someone shared that Bob once answered a question of what he would want his eulogy to say with: “He genuinely cared for the people whose lives he had the privilege of touching. He often said he would not go to his grave proud of the equipment built or services provided at Barry-Wehmiller, but, instead, the people who built them.”
The AME community honors this incredible man and carries forward his legacy of love, leadership and humanity.
