Friday, Oct. 23 Location Code
8:00am-12:00pm Room 237/238, 2nd floor FW/35
Highlights

Develop willingness and confidence to experiment with alternative behavior

Move leaders from resistance to needed action, using effective coaching, counseling and instruction techniques; learn about the basics of motivational interviewing, identifying an individual’s behavioral characteristics and helping to transform reluctance to action; understand the six stages of change and effective timing for coaching to support effective change management.

Overview

Learn strategies for counseling a leader who isn’t ready for coaching, helping to remove barriers to needed lean change. Gain information about crucial coaching and communication skills to support effective change management. Focus on the first three stages of behavioral change, with additional information about strategies and techniques in all six stages of change. Learn how to assist people who exhibit these characteristics: pre-contemplation (people who are resistant to changing their behavior), contemplation (people, sometimes called supporters, with awareness of alternative behavior, who seriously consider action but do not commit to change) and preparation (intent upon changing their behavior, but lacking the confidence to experiment with new behavior/change). Explore basic elements of motivational interviewing, identifying an individual’s behavioral characteristics and moving a leader from resistance to action through stages of change. Hear about effective timing for counseling, coaching and instructing as well as coaching techniques that create roadblocks to change. After discussion and demonstration of concepts and techniques, practice role-playing and participate in other interactive, small-team activities.
