Vanderbilt Medical Laboratories Tour

Topic(s)

Tour the growing healthcare system Vanderbilt Medical Laboratories, the largest non-government employer in Middle Tennessee.

Note: Personal identification is required for this tour.

Overview

Vanderbilt Medical Laboratories is a 110,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility designed to improve laboratory service levels for VUMC clinicians and team members. This facility will support clinical and education innovation and the growth of its enterprise clinically, operationally and financially.

Here are a few fun facts you'll learn about on this tour:

  • The Core Lab automation line (Roche) supports minimal manual processing of specimens. This automation line has the first vertical lift in the United States. There are only a few in Europe.
  • The microbiology automation line (CoPan) is one of the few automation systems in the U.S.
  • The “Hollywood Squares” sorting device receives (logs in) specimens into its laboratory information system and lights up the box where the specimen should go. This allows people from other areas of the laboratory to help during short staffing situations.
  • The automation cart for the delivery of specimens is commonly used at Amazon. This cart is programmed to go to each section of the laboratory with specimens and reduces the waste of “steps.”
  • With the 5-S appropriate labeling, there is nothing extra in the work area.
  • The company hopes to have the inventory management system up and running by May.
  • The setup will include visual cues in multiple areas, like if the instrumentation is up and running or down for maintenance, if the specimens are in centrifuges, and if the specimens are in dry ice bins.
