Starting with grass-roots continuous improvement efforts over 20 years ago, S&C Electric Company developed its Lean Performance System (LPS) almost 10 years ago. LPS is a collection of lean principles, tools and practices integrated in the business structure. Built on the foundation of S&C’s core values and guiding principles, and backed by its 110-year heritage, the success of LPS relies upon a value versus waste philosophy, lean-minded leaders, proven lean techniques and the people of S&C. With the goal of everybody solves problems, the LPS has been positioned to be the way S&C thinks and works.

Specific areas to be covered in the tour include: Standardized work documentation in use to improve quality and help provide process stability; supermarket-based pull systems in use to provide on-time parts delivery and inventory control; value stream model where lean ideas are tested and evaluated using a PDCA approach; visual KPI boards that are set up for a department or a specific process to monitor performance and to display problem-solving activities; TPM used to improve machine reliability and TWI practices. See recent improvements in the sheet metal fabrication and paint systems to support kit-by-kit flow to the mixed-model assembly lines. S&C employees will talk about how their processes have improved with LPS-based changes being implemented.
