HM Electronics, Inc. (HME) is a diverse group of companies that designs, manufactures, sells and services specialized communications, audio and software solutions for a variety of niche markets. Their 140,000 square foot Carlsbad, Calif. headquarters is home to administrative offices, production facilities, R&D innovation center and a customer support center and 580 employees. The AME assessment team was impressed by HME’s dedicated efforts to engage all employees in an operational excellence culture by using multiple creative techniques to involve their team members. Teams were exceptionally well-integrated, and the company leaders have built efficient cross-functional processes and a consciously designed culture that achieves superior results. In addition, the assessors witnessed several excellent examples of systems for scheduling and managing workflow on the shop floor, in engineering and in software development.
