I had a moment this week that reminded me why our mission at the Association for Manufacturing Excellence is so important.
While grabbing breakfast, I met a waitress who was clearly overwhelmed — juggling too many tables and managing requests from every direction while still keeping things running smoothly. Yet, what struck me most wasn’t how busy she was — but the genuine, calm smile she wore through it all.
I asked her, “How do you manage to keep smiling with so much going on?” She paused, smiled again, and said, “It’s part of my uniform every morning.”
What a powerful response.
That moment stayed with me because it speaks directly to what we strive for in continuous improvement. It reminded me that excellence isn’t always about grand innovation or massive transformation. Sometimes, it’s about showing up each day with intention, grace and the mindset that no matter what challenges arise, we can face them with purpose.
At AME, we talk a lot about lean, processes and leadership. But we also believe deeply in culture — in the daily habits, attitudes and small commitments that create resilience. That waitress, whether she knew it or not, was living out the spirit of continuous improvement. She had found a way to bring excellence into even the toughest moments, not by doing more but by choosing how she showed up.
Let’s carry that mindset into our work, our leadership and our community. Excellence doesn’t come only from systems — it comes from people. From smiles. From purpose.
That same spirit lives in the people of AME — and this week, we say goodbye to one of those people. Desiree Dolecki, who has contributed so much to our community with grace, kindness and excellence, will be leaving AME. Her dedication and positive energy have made a lasting impact, and while we will miss her deeply, we wish her all the best in her next chapter. I am personally grateful that we have had the last five years together. It is not goodbye; she will stay as a member of the AME family.
I hope you all had a wonderful Memorial Day weekend. Let’s take this moment to honor and remember the brave men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces who gave their lives in service to our country. It is a solemn reminder of the cost of freedom and the courage of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
As always, please stay safe and keep looking out for one another.
