Manufacturing as a Desirable Career Path

Monday, September 16, 2013

The world is changing rapidly as other countries and regions acquire competitive advantages that seriously challenge many aspects our country’s manufacturing and educational dominance. To remain relevant as a North American manufacturing powerhouse, there needs to be A Manufacturing Renaissance with a strategic plan for the revitalization of manufacturing, the public education system and the economy.

To address the need for the revitalization of the manufacturing sector, AME has adopted a new vision for “A Manufacturing Renaissance Driven by People-Centric Leadership Coupled with Enterprise Excellence.” The association has realigned its strategic initiatives to address the challenges facing a manufacturing and educational renaissance. The public agrees manufacturing is critical to reviving the economy, but they would not recommend manufacturing jobs to their sons and daughters. One of AME’s initiatives is to get parents, schools and students to see “Manufacturing as a Desirable Career Path.”

To assist in creating the awareness of the need for more career-ready citizens and the opportunities for high-paying jobs in advanced technology and manufacturing, AME will be reaching out to school districts to offer them a corporate membership. This membership will allow teachers and students to attend AME events at member prices. In addition, the district will receive five copies of Target Magazine to increase their awareness of what will be required for career readiness with 21st century learning skills.

This initiative will support the revitalization of manufacturing by re-energizing a world-class educational and training system to enable our communities and their citizens to have the education and skills to qualify for good-paying jobs to lead in designing and building things at home, again.

AME’s role is to reach out to local school districts and make them aware of AME’s offers. AME also would bring to them the latest best practices and tools available from our alliance partners and learning organizations. This will enable the schools to help design their curriculums and guide students to be career-ready citizens. This would empower them to make informed choices about the best paths to rewarding careers.

Glenn Marshall and the “Manufacturing as a Desirable Career Path” team will lead the coordination of this effort. Initially, we are asking national and regional board members to pilot this initiative. The plan is for AME members to adopt schools. Additional information will be forthcoming on the details of this approach. We believe this can address many of social and economic issues facing our country.

We feel that these actions will bring communities, businesses and citizens together to support the infusing of career-ready citizens into the workforce and/or colleges, which in turn will provide a higher standard of living and quality of life for all.
