Newport News Shipbuilding, Project Manager

The Association for Manufacturing Excellence (AME) southeastern region hosted a training event in June at Bauer Compressors in Norfolk, Virginia, entitled “Building Leaders to Achieve Perfection: Heartbeat Leaders First”.  TMG Inc. led this training focused on how to build a dream team of Heartbeat Leaders and shared best practices in their engagement, training and development.

According to Joe Barto of TMG, “Those first-line supervisors, who are usually in their first leadership position in charge of the people doing the value-added work of the organization, are Heartbeat Leaders and are responsible for creating the perfect day for their employees.  This workshop helped attendees understand that it is their responsibility to describe what perfect looks like and then teach, coach and support the Heartbeat Leader to create the environment for perfect to happen to increase workforce productivity and profit."

Rob Hogan, vice president of Newport News Shipbuilding manufacturing and supply chain management, shared his career story and how he has always looked for new and innovative opportunities to improve efficiency while also improving shipbuilders’ equipment and work environments.

As AME Southeastern region director, I believe it will be exciting to see how this training will be used to continue to build Heartbeat Leaders aligning with the AME mission to Share-Learn-Grow.
